Marvell and ASUS Team Up to Enable Mass Market Availability of TD-SCDMA Smartphones

Marvell, a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today announced that ASUS has chosen Marvell as a strategic partner to launch a new series of TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) smartphones in China. ASUS' new T10 and T20 series smartphones are powered by Marvell® PXA920 platform, the first commercially available single-chip solution which supports China Mobile's latest version of OPhone OMS system.
"I am proud of the leading role Marvell has played in the development of the TD-SCDMA standard, and I am particularly excited to see the launch of the ASUS TD smartphone with the addition of mobile gaming and mobile TV features all in one device – a true breakthrough in mobile telephone technology," said Weili Dai, Marvell's Co-Founder. "The ASUS smartphones are powered by Marvell's PXA920 platform, the industry's first single-chip TD-SCDMA solution: a tiny chip which delivers gigahertz speed, dynamic multimedia for mobile TV, live video, gaming and many exciting new applications, all to be unified by Marvell's beautiful and easy-to-use Kinoma® software experience. I believe the ASUS TD smartphones will be just the beginning of mass deployment of cost effective, advanced TD-SCDMA-based smartphones throughout China." ?
"ASUS is very excited to have Marvell as a partner in developing the TD-SCDMA phones. Marvell's single-chip PXA 920 allowed us to produce thinner and lighter phones without compromising any technical performance," said Benson Lin, ASUS' corporate vice president and the general manager of its mobile devices unit.
ASUS T10 and T20 smartphones will provide consumers a high quality mobile gaming and mobile TV experience, along with best-in-class Wi-Fi connectivity, all delivered in a sleek and sophisticated ASUS design form factor. ASUS has also chosen Marvell Avastar™ 88W8787 to enable 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 and FM connectivity as a featured component inside the new TD-SCDMA smartphones, offering exceptional Wi-Fi range and throughput and delivering crisp Bluetooth and FM audio quality. Together, Marvell and ASUS are raising the technology bar in the industry, bringing consumers powerful performance, premium design and quality – all at an attractive price point.

Apple Delays 4G LTE iPhone to 2012

The iPhone 5, due out sometime this summer, will not be an LTE 4G phone, says Telecom Pragmatics analyst Sam Greenholtz, who has talked with people close to the matter.
"The next iPhone -- the iPhone 6 -- is an LTE version under development now with production aimed for a June/July launch next year," Greenholtz said, citing his sources. Checks with several industry insiders and analysts also support Greenholtz' information. Apple did not comment, and Verizon(VZ) said it had "nothing to announce."
The news comes as speculation heats up on Wall Street Thursday around the possibility of an iPhone 5 launch at AT&T(T) this summer and a separate iPhone 5 launch at Verizon later this year or next, according to a note from a supply channel research shop.
Not only will the lack of a 4G Verizon iPhone likely disappoint everyone who passed on the iPhone 4 in hopes of buying one that would run on Verizon's fastest network, it also keeps Apple in the middle of the pack behind more muscular Google(GOOG) Android phones.Motorola(MMI)HTC and LG are all prepping 4G LTE Android phones, which are among the 10 LTE devices coming to Verizon as early as this spring.
"I don't think Apple saw this level of hardware competition when they locked in iPhone 5 specs," says MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen, referring to Apple's component decisions.
The iPhone 5 is expected to be a world phone designed to work on European networks, the HSDPA-Plus network that AT&T(T) has dubbed 4G, and on Verizon's 3G network.
Other improvements include a possibly bigger 4-inch screen, a dual-core processor and, as we first reported last year, an 8-megapixel Sony(SNE) camera.
"They are basically playing catch up," says Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, referring to the features that are, or have been, common to phones from top-tier rivals.
The news comes as Apple prepares to launch a new version of its tablet, the iPad 2, next week. CEO Steve Jobs, who is out indefinitely due to illness, is not likely to be the master of ceremonies. And his absence from the event will once again revive questions of how the company can continue its phenomenal success streak without him.
The delayed LTE iPhone may be the first big test of acting-chief COO Tim Cook's persuasiveness.

Apple to host event, iPad 2 in the wings

Apple Inc is hosting a media event next week to show off the next-generation of the iPad, as it prepares to take on new rivals in the fast-growing tablet market.
Apple, which sent an invitation to reporters on Wednesday via email, will host the March 2 gathering at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, the same venue where Apple unveiled the original iPad in January 2010.
The characteristically succinct invitation featured an image of a calendar page with a giant "2" emblazoned in the center, peeled back just slightly to reveal the familiar form of an iPad. The invite teased, "Come see what 2011 will be the year of."
Given the sheer crush of competing tablets coming on the market, Apple will face a bigger challenge to wow consumers with the new iPad, which is expected to go on sale in April.
The iPad has completely dominated the nascent tablet computer market, but literally dozens of new devices are set to launch this year, so Apple will have to prove it can stay one step ahead of its pursuers.
Apple's rivals include Motorola Mobility, Research in Motion and Hewlett-Packard Co, all of which are aggressively promoting their tablets.
Apple sold nearly 15 million iPads last year, when it had the market largely to itself. Analysts expect the company to at least double that figure this year, as the overall market explodes to more than 50 million units.
Industry watchers expect Apple to show off a thinner, lighter and faster version of the 10-inch touchscreen tablet, and also add a front-facing camera to enable video chatting using the company's FaceTime application.
Many analysts believe Apple may also add a chip that allows the iPad to run on CDMA networks like that of Verizon Wireless.
There is also the question of who will lead the event, with Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs out on indefinite medical leave. As Apple's master showman, Jobs typically presides over major product launches.
If not Jobs on stage, other potential emcees include Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook and marketing chief Phil Schiller.
With the original iPad priced starting at $499, investors will also be watching to see if Apple plans to creep farther down the price chain to broaden the iPad's appeal.
Apple's rivals has so far been unable to match the iPad on price. But Apple has pinched its own gross margins by pricing the tablet lower than its serious competitors.

Mobile Music Revenues to reach $5.5 billion by 2015

Hampshire, UK -- A new report published today by Juniper Research forecasts that music consumed on mobile handsets will generate $5.5 billion annually in 2015, a rise of $3.1 billion from 2010. The report finds that mobile music is becoming an increasingly important part of the digital music sector, which is propping up a failing industry hit by over a decade of widespread online piracy.
Since the popularisation of P2P file sharing at the end of the last century, the music industry’s sales have gone into free fall, as consumers rejected the physical distribution of music in favour of easier, but illegal means of acquiring it. The industry response was initially slow, but legal digital distribution services, such as Apple’s iTunes are now blossoming, and mobile handsets are increasingly becoming the key platform for them.
Mobile Music Opportunities report author Daniel Ashdown argues: “Initially, PC downloading and sideloading to MP3 players was the only way to go; but the development of mobile devices has now reached the point where they match the technical specs of dedicated MP3 players. Add in connectivity – just one click to buy and download – along with all the other smartphone features, and there is no competition between the two. This is why sales of Apple’s iPhone are going to outstrip its iPod in the not too distant future.”
However, the report warns that piracy still remains a significant threat – both online and on the mobile. Juniper Research finds that P2P file sharing is slowly migrating to the mobile, with BitTorrent applications now available on Android Market, for example. With the rollout of 4G networks about to increase, the report recommends that the graduate response – enacted by legislation in many countries – be strongly enforced and expanded to mobile networks.

Smart Search Tip on Sony Ericsson Spiro

Nobody remembers phone numbers these days because our phones remember them for us. However, if you can remember the first two digits of someone’s phone number, you can take advantage of the cool Smart Search feature on the Sony Ericsson Spiro.
Enable Smart Search
  • Go to MENU.
  • Select “settings”.
  • Choose “calls”.
  • Select “smart search”.
  • Select to turn Smart Search on.
Use Smart Search
With Smart Search enabled, all you need to do is enter the first two digits of the phone number you want to call. This will bring up a list of all of the entries in the handset that start with those two numbers.

Gingerbread Update Winging Its Way to HTC Desire Phones on Three

Good news for HTC Desire users here in the UK, if you’re on the Three network, you are soon to receive the latest Android update.
Three tweeted the news today, confirming that their HTC Desire customer will be treated to an update to Gingerbread 2.3 very soon. How soon isn’t quite clear yet, as the numerical network failed to provide any dates for us to look forward to, however, they are expected to release a timescale shortly.
Although new HTC handsets like the HTC Desire S are to be released with Android 2.3 installed, it is unclear as to whether all the HTC handsets will get a Gingerbread update. If rumours are to be believed though, the HTC Desire Z and HD will also be getting a Gingerbread makeover.
There has also been speculation that customers on networks other than Three could soon be getting an Android 2.3 update, with further Desire update announcements expected from other carriers soon.

Windows Phone 7 Update Doesn’t Go As Smoothly As Hoped

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 pre-update update is still in the process of rolling out to users, but even at this early stage, reports are coming in that a problem has occurred when trying to update the two Samsung devices using the OS.
The Focus and the Omnia 7 reportedly hang on the later stages of the update and require a reboot; however some Samsung Omnia’s would hang but then fail to reboot, becoming ‘bricked’. According to ArsTechnica, Samsung used slightly different firmware versions on its phones, and this could be the cause of the problem.
Microsoft quickly disabled the update for Samsung phones, but they have yet to issue an official statement on the situation. A post from a moderator on their support forum suggests Samsung owners should not retry the update if a notification does slip through, and that in ‘approximately three days time’ a new update will be pushed out.
While it’s very difficult to gauge the exact amount of affected phones, one must assume it’s a fair amount for Microsoft to stop sending the update out.  It’s also not the kind of press attention they needed for their first attempt at updating Windows Phone 7 either.
Have you had any problems with the update?

Mock-Up iPad 2 Surfaces Online

The internet is awash with iPad 2 news today after Apple finally confirmed it is hosting a launch event for the mooted tablet next Wednesday. That hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from churning though as Japanese blogiBlackBox has posted pictures of what it claims to be an accurate mock-up of the iPad 2.
The spy shots confirm previous reports on the tablet’s features and show it to be a lot thinner and flatter than its predecessor. On the back, we can see a large grill speaker with ‘iPad 2’ written on the casing joined by the familiar Apple logo in the centre. The industry automatically assumed the next-generation iPad would have the number two stuck on the end and these shots further confirm exactly that.
We’ve been hearing for months on end that the iPad 2 could come with two cameras but there’s no obvious sign that the tab has a rear-facing snapper in this mock-up. In the top left corner of the back panel is a circular hole but it isn’t entirely evident that it is a camera. The front of the mock-up tells a slightly better story as a lens can be seen right in the centre of the bezel. As such, it’s probably a safe bet that Facetime video-calling will feature.
Of course, all this is just something else to be added to the mounting hill of speculation, although the rumour stockpiling should come to an end this time next week when the iPad 2 will be finally made official.

HTC Teases Us With Official Flyer Advert

HTC has released the official advert for its first tablet, the HTC Flyer. Announced at Mobile World Congress last week, the desirable 7 inch device managed to win critics over with some intuitive features, despite not running Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
The Flyer bucks the touchscreen trend and comes with a special pressure-sensitive stylus that can be used to take notes. It’s probably more useful for business folk than anyone else but even so, it’s a little different and makes the tablet stand out. HTC’s Sense user interface shows up over Android 2.4 Gingerbread, which is seen by many to be its biggest downfall, especially with Honeycomb tablets being made official way before now. There’s a single core 1.5GHz processor ticking away underneath and the tag line, “a tablet for the whole family” suggests that HTC is aiming the Flyer at  those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy.
We don’t have a definite release date or price point for the HTC Flyer yet, but a Wi-Fi only version of the tab was spotted on a German retail website going for €499 (£425). Now the manufacturer has got an advert online, the Flyer shouldn’t be too far away from the shop shelves.

Samsung To Introduce 8.9 Inch Galaxy Tab This Summer

Samsung is preparing to release an 8.9 inch version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Word comes from Korea’s Yonhap News Agency who were told by a Samsung representative that the mid-sized tablet will be out this summer.
Details on the slate device are all based on speculation at present, although it has been reported in the past that Samsung were to release a tablet that was a little bigger than the original Galaxy Tab but smaller than its recently-announced 10.1-inch Honeycomb device. It’s believed the 8.9 size pad will also come with the tablet-orientated Honeycomb OS, but apart from a vague summer release date, scant information is available on the device.
Samsung announced both of the tablets it has released so far at big tech events and so we wouldn’t be all that surprised if they stuck to tradition and announced the 8.9 inch Galaxy Tab to a global audience again. As the months get warmer, rumours surrounding this potential new tablet should hot up as well.

iPhone 5 To Get 4 Inch Screen Upgrade

The iPhone 5 may be getting a 4 inch screen according to new rumours. Component suppliers told Digitimes of the design revelation which would see Apple ditch the 3.5 inch screen that graced its past iPhones in favour of a bigger display that could compete with the likes of the HTC Desire HD and Samsung Galaxy S2.
The sources added that production lines for the next-gen iPhone have already begun testing with a Digitimes reporter adding: “Apple is interested in expanding the screen size to 4 inches to support the tablet PC market as the vendor only has a 9.7 inch iPad in the market.”
“With Apple joining the 4 inch and larger market, 4 – 5.5 inch will become the major battlefield for smartphones and further change the industry dynamics for small to medium size panels.”
The iPhone 5 is rumoured to get a complete design overhaul and a bigger screen certainly fits the bill. However, it still remains whether the new device would have a Retina display like the iPhone 4 and all iOS apps would need to be re-programmed to fit the revised screen dimensions. Maybe that’s the small price Apple feels it needs to pay to stay on top of the game though.
The latest news follows rumours that Apple may be developing a ‘budget’ iPhone inspired by its iPod nano music player. Now we have the possibility of a smaller and bigger iPhone being in the works, June looks to be an interesting month for Apple indeed.

iPhone 5 Announcement Set For June 5?

Apple could be lifting the iPhone 5 lid on June 5 according to fan site AppleBitch. Beady-eyed readers did some digging on the potential release date for the next-generation iPhone and came up trumps with a conference schedule for favoured Apple venue, the Moscone Centre.
It appears that Camp Cupertino has booked out the venue for a “corporate meeting” between June 5 and 9 believed to be for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The vague booking description could be anything, however, Apple traditionally books venues using this event name. The centre is also booked out for other events later in the month which suggests that 5 June may be D-Day for the iPhone 5.
Another “corporate meeting” is booked at the San Francisco based venue for May 10 and 11 as well which has thrown speculation slightly off track. The iPhone normally comes out towards the end of June so an announcement a few weeks before fits the bill quite nicely. Some believe the May conference could be used for the iPad 2 but we’re hoping it’ll be out in the market by then.
Either way, June 5 is pencilled into our diaries for a potential announcement of the NFC-sporting iDevice. With Steve Jobs likely to be on sick leave for the foreseeable future, it’s thought Apple’s Head of Marketing Phil Schiller will step into his CEO’s shoes to make the announcement as he did with the iPhone 3GS. Wonder if he’ll wear a black polo-neck?

Apple Launches IPhone 4

The Apple iPhone 4 is the latest version of the Apple smartphone and supersedes the three earlier versions offering many more features and applications.
A major difference between this phone and previous models is video calling. The phone has two cameras, one front facing and one back facing. The back facing camera is typical of those found in most modern phones, and although it is far from being the best smartphone camera, it is adequate for the majority of situations where users just want to take a quick snapshot.
However the front facing camera is designed with video calling in mind. It is not that many years ago when the only hand held video calling device people knew about was found on Star Trek, but now it is available to anyone. Apple were far from being the first smartphone manufacturer to include video calling on their phone, but other features of the phone such as its extended battery life, improved connectivity and superb display screen means that it is one of the best implementations of this technology.
This phone is also twice as fast as the iPhone 3 and a remarkable four times as fast as the original iPhone. This is down to an improved processor and software. The operating system is Apple’s IOS which is also found on the iPad. The user interface is a gesture controlled multi-touch screen with virtual sliders, buttons and switches with instantaneous response times. The phone is also equipped with an accelerometer and gyrometer which allows it to be controlled by physical movement of the body.
In addition to all the functionality of the phone, a major appeal is its design and style. It shares many design features with its predecessors, but this fourth generation model has an attractive steel rim. The phone is also flat rather than bulged as were previous models and is a little smaller. This is because the antennae have been moved from the phone to the surrounding metal band. This can cause a problem if users cover a gap on the band that separates the Bluetooth and the 3G antennae, but that is easily fixed by adding a rubber bumper or holding the phone is a slightly different manner.

New iPhone 4 features.

And Steve Jobs proclaims “I name thee iPhone 4” We all had massive hope for this day and it has finally been announced, Steve Jobs has just taken to the stage and announced to the world the new iPhone 4is finally ready to be unleashed on the world. And my goodness what a beauty!! You can forget your Cheryl Cole’s, Megan Fox’s and world cup WAGS (for now) we have a new idol to lust over.
The build up seems to have been forever, and now it has finally arrived, the combination of years of work, internet leaks and my mates uncle who’s mates with someone who is married to the Apple office cleaner has seen… we’ve had claims and counter claims about what the new operating system will it be as fast as superman… now that wait is FINALLY OVER!!!!
The new iPhone 4 features roll off like a roll call of bunnies at the playboy mansion, each one individual and seductive and you would sell your Grandma to have one (sorry Gran).
Steve Jobs announcing 8 key feature of the iPhone 4 a staggering 100 new features compare to the previous 3GS, 1 amazing new design, and it appears that the “iPhone in a bar” was true. The new iPhone 4 has the sleek stainless steel edging, not only does it look amazing it is part of the antenna system! And is really really thin!! 9.3mm to be precise, that is a massive 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS and is the thinnest Smartphone on the planet. The iPhone 4 has a front facing camera for video calls. As well as this the bog standard Smartphone tools apply with Bluetooth, WI-FI, GPS etc…
The display on the iPhone 4 looks out of this world the display boasting a 960 x 640 pixel screen that is an amazing 4x more than the 3GS and if that wasn’t quite enough the OLED screen is glass fronted for super optical quality! This is not only for quality movies and pictures but for everyday uses like text messages and emails!!
The battery on the iPhone 4 has a stupendous 40% more talk time than the regular 3G, it boasts 40hrs music play back, 300hrs on standby, 10hrs of video playback and too boot and a memory of up to 32GB!!
Gaming will not be the same again on mobile phones… iPhone 4 has 3 axis gyro pitch…. What is that I hear you cry!! Well it is a revelation I tell you!! Playing games like jenga (as shown by Steve Jobs) on a phone! Being able to rotate the screen round to different dimensions to take out pieces of the jenga puzzle!!
The camera… this has historically always been (some would say) the iPhone’s Achilles heel a pretty mediocre camera at best but ladies and gentlemen not anymore… the iPhone 4 is packing a super 5MP camera with illuminated backlight, for extra quality pictures and 5x optical zoom! As well as that it has the ease of just a simple tap to focus your pictures and a LED flash!! AMAZING… but wait there is more to come from the 5MP beaut, HD VIDEO RECORDING!! That’s right iPhone 4 has HD recording 720p at 30 frames per second!! And it fits in your pocket! Blown away is not the word for this people!! If that wasn’t enough you will be able to edit your HD videos with the editing software, and you will be able to upload it straight onto Facebook or Youtube in seconds.
Now the operating system…. For this Apple are dropping the ‘Phone’ she will now be referred to as iOS4 the new operating system for iPhone 4 as we said it has over 100 new user features compared to the 3GS, quicker/ sharper /faster than before, this new iOS4 will make multitasking a breeze and flicking between web pages a doddle!!
iBooks is the next biggy on the agenda basically it is the same as on the iPad but brought on to theiPhone 4. It will have the same book shelf as the iPad, same PDF’s…. basically iBookstore on your iPhone, not only was it the people in the conference hall cheering you could hear every tree in the Amazon rain forest (and even the ones outside the dial a phone offices) cheering with delight, about this new feature…
Finally iAds, now this was the corporate part of the presentation, I know there had to be one didn’t there! But like he did with many things tonight, Mr Jobs pronounced this as a good thing quoting that it will be used to make develops of apps more money (so if you’re a app developer you could be quids in…) basically you will be able to stream ads to your phone and the list of corporations already on this new marketing band wagon went from Nissan to Unileiver. Is this the future of advertising? Hold this space…
And finally I can hear everyone screaming “I WANT ONE WHEN CAN I HAVE IT I WANT IT NOW NOW NOW”…. Well 24th of June 2010 is the magical day for the UK! Apple announced that the iPhone will be on sale on 24th June 2010 and available on pre-order from 15th June we in the UK are amongst the lucky few with the USA, France, Germany & Japan being able to get it on this date and other countries such as Australia & Canada having to wait till July unlucky Aussies….
